  • Node creation. Freeplane lets you add main and secondary nodes to structure information. Each node can contain text, images, links, or custom icons. The hierarchy is adjusted by dragging elements.
  • Custom formatting. Nodes can be modified with different colors, fonts, and styles. You can change the size, typeface, and background to highlight important information.
  • External and internal links. Hyperlinks can be inserted to web pages or local files. Nodes within the same map can also be linked to create cross-references.
  • Notes and attributes. Each node supports additional notes. Attributes let you add metadata such as priority, date, or task status.
  • Flexible export. Maps are saved in the .mm format, but can also be exported to PDF, PNG, HTML, or text. The export option preserves the hierarchical structure.
  • Advanced search. The filtering system locates nodes by keywords, attributes, or content. Results are shown in a list or highlighted on the map.
  • Predefined templates. Freeplane includes templates for different uses: project management, decision making, or brainstorming. Templates speed up map creation.
  • Script automation. The tool supports Groovy scripts for automating repetitive tasks. Scripts modify nodes, apply styles, or generate reports.
  • Presentation mode. Maps can be turned into interactive presentations. Nodes are displayed sequentially or in selected branches.
  • Network collaboration. Several users can edit the same map through protocols such as WebDAV or Nextcloud. Changes are synchronized in real time.
  • Formula support. Mathematical expressions are integrated using LaTeX. Formulas appear rendered inside the nodes.
  • Change history. Freeplane records modifications and allows you to revert to previous versions. The history includes the date and author in collaborative mode.

Freeplane emerged as a fork of FreeMind in 2007. The developers aimed to improve stability and add advanced features. The project is written in Java, which ensures compatibility with Windows as well as other operating systems. The development team includes open-source contributors coordinated by volunteers. Regular updates have added fixes and new features since its release.
