Materialious was created in response to controversial changes on YouTube, including the removal of the dislike counter and aggressive monetization. The project emerged in 2022 as a fork of existing solutions such as Invidious, combining open-source technologies with new features. It is programmed mainly in JavaScript and Ruby, taking advantage of Invidious infrastructure for the backend while implementing a completely new frontend.
