• Customizable keyboard shortcut. Lets you assign specific key combinations to mute and unmute the microphone. The setting applies globally across the system.
• Universal compatibility. Works with any communication app that uses audio input, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and other video conferencing platforms.
• Status indicator. Shows a menu bar icon that changes visually to reflect whether the microphone is active or muted.
• Persistent settings. Keeps the mute state when you switch between audio devices or restart third-party apps.
• Push-to-talk and push-to-mute modes. Offers two operating schemes: hold a key to speak, or hold a key to temporarily mute.
• Background operation. Lets you control the microphone without the meeting app being in the foreground or fully visible.
• Privacy guaranteed. It does not process or store audio streams. Muting is done through system APIs without intercepting voice data.
• Cross-platform compatibility. Versions are available for macOS and Windows with identical functionality across both operating systems.
• Automatic hardware detection. Automatically recognizes when new audio input devices are connected and applies your existing settings.
• Workflow integration. Lets you mute and unmute the microphone during screen sharing or when other apps are running in full screen.

Mic Drop began development in 2020 as an independent project to solve recurring problems in remote work environments. The initial macOS version was written in Swift and later adapted to Windows using C++. In 2022, the core was rewritten in Rust to improve cross-platform compatibility. The current modular architecture makes it possible to add support for new operating systems without changing the core logic.
