  • Handling remote files. The library can include files stored on network servers. Protocols like NFS, SMB/CIFS, SFTP, and HTTP are supported. Files are stored in a local cache for smooth playback. The cache is managed automatically with configurable size limits. Remote files are indexed the same way as local ones. Authentication for network resources is configurable.
  • Music tagging system. MPD uses metadata from ID3, Vorbis Comment, APE, and other standard tags. Metadata defines the library organization into artist and album views. Searches can be performed on any metadata field. Custom tags are also supported and accessible. The lack of tags in a file is compensated by information from the file name and directory.

Development of Music Player Daemon began in 2003. The initial creator is Warren Dukes. The goal was to build a music player for embedded systems with limited resources.
