Pixelfed was created by Daniel Supernault. Development began in 2018 as a response to the growing centralization of social networks. The platform is primarily built with PHP using the Laravel framework. The database uses MySQL for information storage. The frontend implements Bootstrap along with custom components. The project follows the free software development model. Contributions come from developers around the world. The first stable version was released in late 2018.
