  • Visual node editing. PraxisLIVE uses a programming system based on interconnected nodes. Each node represents a functional component that can be configured individually. Nodes are linked by connections that carry data between them, allowing you to build complex processing pipelines.
  • Java scripting. The software lets you extend its functionality with Java code. Users can create custom components by writing Java classes that integrate directly into the visual environment. This provides the flexibility to implement specific logic.
  • Real-time graphics support. Includes 2D/3D rendering engines with hardware acceleration. Graphics can be manipulated dynamically during execution using parameters controlled by nodes or external scripts.
  • Audio processing. PraxisLIVE provides tools for audio signal synthesis and analysis. Audio nodes let you create effect chains, tone generators, and spectral processors with low latency.
  • OSC communication. Implements the Open Sound Control protocol to exchange data with other devices and applications. OSC messages can be sent and received to control parameters or synchronize systems.
  • Video input/output. Supports live video capture from cameras and capture cards. It lets you mix multiple video sources and apply effects in real time before sending the output to screens or projectors.
  • Hardware control. Integrates with MIDI and HID devices to enable physical control of parameters. Controllers can be mapped directly to variables inside the nodes.
  • Data analysis. Includes functions for processing numerical data streams. It can receive information from external sensors, perform statistical calculations, and display the results graphically.
  • Project export. Designs you create can be packaged as standalone applications. This makes it easier to distribute interactive installations without requiring installation of the development environment.
  • Live debugging. Offers tools for monitoring the data flow between nodes during execution. Values can be inspected in real time to identify performance or logic issues.
  • Cross-platform support. The software runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux with consistent features across operating systems. It relies on portable technologies to ensure compatibility.
  • Interface customization. Control panels can be designed specifically for each project. UI elements are added as separate components that respond to changes in the data.

PraxisLIVE was created by Neil C. Smith as an evolution of his earlier work on audiovisual creation tools, with its first public releases appearing around 2013. Development began as a personal project to combine visual programming with traditional programming languages. It is written primarily in Java and uses the NetBeans Platform (RCP) as the foundation of its development environment. Over the years it has incorporated libraries such as Processing, JOGL, and GStreamer for multimedia capabilities. The project remains active, with regular updates that add features and improve performance.
