  • Layer visualization. QField loads and displays vector and raster layers in QGIS-compatible formats. It supports formats such as GeoPackage, Shapefile, GeoTIFF, and WMS/WMTS. Layers are rendered according to the symbology defined in QGIS.
  • Offline editing. The application allows you to modify the geometries and attributes of vector data without a connection. Changes are saved locally and then synchronized with the main database when a connection becomes available.
  • QGIS synchronization. QField uses projects created in QGIS Desktop. The .qgs and .qgz files can be transferred to the mobile device while preserving all layer settings, forms, and styles.
  • Custom forms. Attribute forms are configured in QGIS using dedicated widgets. In the field, users see the same forms with touch-friendly controls such as drop-down lists, checkboxes, and date pickers.
  • GPS navigation. The application includes navigation tools based on the device's GPS. It shows your current position on the map and lets you follow waypoints or predefined routes.
  • Geotagged photo capture. QField can take photos with the device's camera and automatically link them to spatial records. Images are stored with coordinates and metadata.
  • Measurement tools. Includes functions for calculating linear distances and polygon areas, and for obtaining the coordinates of specific points. Results are displayed in the configured units.
  • Multi-user project support. Several devices can work on the same dataset using version control systems. QField detects editing conflicts and offers options to resolve them.
  • Data export. Collected data can be exported in multiple standard GIS formats. The application generates files compatible with desktop software for further processing.
  • Advanced customization. Using QGIS expressions and settings, QField's behavior can be adapted to specific workflows. This includes data validation, automatic calculations, and visibility rules.
  • Attribute search. Lets you quickly find records through text searches in alphanumeric fields. Results are highlighted on the map and in the attribute table.
  • Advanced style support. Correctly displays rule-based symbology, complex labeling, and 3D representations configured in QGIS. Maintains visual consistency between desktop and mobile.

QField was initially developed by OPENGIS.ch in 2015 as a complementary solution to QGIS. The project was created to meet the need for professional mobile GIS tools. The application is written primarily in C++, with Qt QML components for the interface. The source code is available under the GPL license. Over the years, it has received contributions from many developers and organizations in the QGIS ecosystem.
