  • Mission planning. Lets you create complex flight routes using waypoints. Users can define reference points and specific actions, and adjust altitudes or speeds for each segment. The map view makes it easy to edit and review the route before execution.
  • Real-time monitoring. Displays detailed telemetry during flight, such as altitude, speed, GPS position, and battery status. Data is presented in customizable widgets, with configurable alerts.
  • Vehicle setup. Offers tools for adjusting PX4 or ArduPilot firmware parameters. Includes wizards for calibrating sensors, motors, and remote controls.
  • Flight analysis. Records telemetry data and saves it as .tlog logs, and can replay recorded flights. Logs from the flight controller (such as .ulg) can be downloaded for diagnostics and analyzed with external tools.
  • Manual control. Provides an interface for operating the vehicle with a joystick or RC controller. Includes assisted and manual flight modes, with critical data shown on screen.
  • Multi-vehicle support. Manages multiple drones at the same time. Each unit appears on the map with its current status, letting you switch between them without restarting the application.
  • MAVLink integration. Uses the MAVLink protocol for communication between the vehicle and the ground station. Supports connections over radio, USB, or TCP/UDP networks.
  • Geofencing. Defines restricted areas using geographic polygons. Depending on the configuration, the system warns you or prevents the drone from entering prohibited zones.
  • Camera support. Controls imaging devices connected to the drone. Configures shooting modes, adjusts gimbal angles, and displays real-time video streaming.
  • Interface customization. Lets you adjust the appearance and layout of the interface, including units and display settings, to suit operational needs.
  • Flight simulation. Connects with simulation environments such as Gazebo or jMAVSim for testing without physical hardware. Simulated data is handled the same way as in real flights.
  • RTK support. Adds centimeter-level precision using RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) navigation. Requires compatible GNSS hardware and a connection to a base station.

QGroundControl was originally developed by Lorenz Meier as part of the PX4 ecosystem. It is currently maintained by the community under the Dronecode Foundation. The software is written in C++ with Qt for the graphical interface, which allows it to run on multiple operating systems. The mobile versions are built from the same Qt codebase as the desktop version, offering the same core functionality.
