  • Multichannel Audio. Support for up to 128 output channels with advanced matrix routing. Includes in-line effects processing, parametric EQ, and compatibility with Dante and AVB protocols for integration into professional audio networks.
  • Video Layers. Metal rendering engine capable of handling 1000 simultaneous layers. Processes compositions with per-cue blend modes, geometric projection mapping, and support for 4K and higher formats.
  • DMX Control. Lighting management via Art-Net and sACN protocols. Integrated library with lighting instrument profiles and unlimited multi-universe control capability.
  • Control Cues. Programmable triggers to execute actions based on time, OSC, or MIDI. Allows creating conditional logic and automation between different systems.
  • Timeline Mode. Visual editing of cues via drag-and-drop with precise adjustment of start points and durations. Waveform visualization for sample-accurate synchronization.
  • Collaborative Work. Multiple users can connect simultaneously to the same workspace. Differentiated permission system for design, operation, and read-only access.
  • Cart Mode. Simplified interface for live performance with assignable buttons. Allows manual cue triggering during shows without exposing the main interface.
  • Timecode Synchronization. Master and slave via LTC, MTC, and MIDI Clock. Timecode generation with different frame rates and latency compensation.
  • Video Effects. Image processing chain applicable per layer or composition. Includes color correction, keying, transformations, and customizable filters via shaders.
  • Network Cues. Sending and receiving OSC, TCP/UDP messages, and hexadecimal data. Integration with external control systems via custom commands and feedback.
  • Scripting. Advanced automation via AppleScript and JavaScript. API for parameter control, dynamic cue creation, and behavior customization.
  • Remote Monitoring. Companion iOS applications allow status viewing and basic control from mobile devices. Includes video preview and metadata.
  • File Formats. Extensive support for professional formats such as Broadcast WAV, MPEG-2, ProRes, and DNxHD. Import of playlists and embedded metadata.
  • Project Management. Workspace system with cue import/export. Automatic backup and document versioning during work sessions.
  • Precueing. Intelligent pre-loading of resources into memory before execution. Reduces latency in playback of large files and network streams.

QLab was developed by Figure 53, a company founded by Christopher Ashworth. The first public version was released in 2008 as a specialized solution for theaters. The software is programmed in Objective-C with C++ components for digital signal processing. The architecture uses native macOS frameworks including Core Audio, AVFoundation, and Metal for graphic rendering. Later versions have incorporated support for networked audio technologies and standardized stage control protocols.
