  • Operating system selection. The tool includes a list of operating systems for Raspberry Pi, such as Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu, LibreELEC, and others. You can choose between official and third-party images, and filter the list by Raspberry Pi model.
  • Storage selection. Detects connected drives such as SD cards and USB drives, and lets you pick the target device for the installation. System drives are hidden by default to help prevent accidental overwriting.
  • OS customization. Lets you set the hostname, username and password, Wi-Fi connection, locale, and SSH access before writing the image, so no extra steps are needed after the first boot.
  • Image download. Downloads operating system images directly from official servers, so you always get the latest listed version. Downloaded images are cached for later use.
  • Verified writing. After writing the image, the tool verifies that the data was written correctly and without errors.
  • Custom image support. Lets you write images that you downloaded manually, in formats such as .img, .zip, and compressed files like .xz or .gz.
  • Storage erase. Includes an option to erase the target drive and format it as FAT32 before use.
  • Headless setup. Makes first-time setup easier for devices that will be used without a monitor, by preconfiguring Wi-Fi, SSH, and user settings in the image.
  • Cross-platform. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with the same core functionality on all systems.
  • Update notifications. Notifies you when a new version of the application is available.
  • Simple interface. Designed to be clear and straightforward, guiding you through the choice of device, operating system, and storage.

Raspberry Pi Imager was developed by Raspberry Pi Ltd (formerly the Raspberry Pi Foundation) as a unified way to install operating systems on its boards. It was first released in 2020 and is written in C++ using the Qt framework. It was created to simplify the initial setup of Raspberry Pi boards, especially for users without technical experience. Over time it has gained features such as pre-installation customization and support for more operating systems.
