Russet

Russet is a private and lightweight artificial intelligence application for Mac OS, iPhone and iPad, powered by Apple Intelligence. All conversations run entirely on the device by default, with no accounts, no ads, and no tracking. It includes local AI models with advanced reasoning capabilities, optimized to operate offline. Optionally, the user can provide their own OpenAI API key to access cloud models like GPT-5.1 and GPT-5 mini.

• Privacy by default. All text processing and conversations occur on the user's device. If access to cloud models is enabled using your own API key, requests are sent directly to the provider and are not stored or inspected by the Russet developer. No data leaves the device without explicit authorization.
• Smart calendar templates. Russet locally accesses the device's actual calendar events to generate instant summaries of the daily, weekly, or next day's agenda. Calendar content does not leave the device and is processed using Apple Intelligence.
• Branching conversations. The user can create branches from any point in the conversation. This feature allows exploring different directions or alternative solutions without losing the original conversation history.
• Local PDF document analysis. Russet extracts text from PDF files attached to the chat, processes the information, and answers specific questions about the content. The files remain on the device and are not uploaded to external servers.
• Offline agent tools. The application integrates automation modules that operate locally on system data: reading and writing calendar events, managing contacts, organizing files, and accessing health data. All operations run without an internet connection.
• Flow: one-touch text editing and processing. Flow is a set of single-action text tools. Summarize, tag, debate, translate, or rephrase any selected text. These operations use local models and do not require a network connection.
• Game: interactive text adventures. Russet includes a conversational text game engine. The user can create or explore interactive stories where the AI acts as a narrator or character controller. All language processing runs locally.
• Biometric conversation lock. The user can protect specific conversations using Face ID or Touch ID. Locked conversations remain encrypted on the device and are not visible without biometric authentication.
• Local reasoning models. Russet incorporates artificial intelligence models specialized in logical and mathematical reasoning tasks. These models are optimized to run entirely on the device without significant performance degradation.
• Response parameter customization. The user adjusts the creativity, tone, and directiveness of Russet's responses using sliders and mode selectors. This setting is specific to each conversation and is stored locally.
• Multilingual support. Russet recognizes and generates text in thirteen languages, both written and spoken. Language selection automatically adapts to the language configured in the operating system or to the user's input language.
• Compatibility with GPT-5.1 and GPT-5 mini. The user can manually add their own OpenAI API key to use the GPT-5.1 and GPT-5 mini models. The application sends requests directly to OpenAI's servers without intermediaries or intermediate storage by Russet.
• Automatic conversation summaries. Russet generates summaries of conversation threads using only on-device processing. These summaries allow resuming long conversations without needing to review the entire history.
• Conversation export. The user can export complete conversations or selected fragments in plain text format. Export is done offline and does not require data transmission.
• Compatibility with Apple Intelligence. Russet is built on the Apple Intelligence framework. The application requires iPhone or iPad devices with an A17 Pro or M1 processor and later, which are the only platforms that support the neural engine necessary for the local execution of AI models.
• Offline by default. Russet does not require an internet connection for any of its core functions. The default local model and all agent tools work in airplane mode. Connectivity is only necessary if the user decides to use cloud models with their own API key.

The development history of Russet begins in 2023. The program was created by Ricky Takkar, a software engineer specialized in artificial intelligence on mobile devices. Initial development focused on the feasibility of running large language models entirely on iOS devices without sacrificing inference speed. The application is written in Swift and uses the Core ML framework for compiling and executing neural models. The project was publicly announced in 2024. Russet does not rely on external servers and does not collect usage telemetry. The application is distributed exclusively through the Apple App Store as a free download.
