  • Syntax highlighting. SciTE supports syntax highlighting for dozens of programming languages. Highlighting is applied automatically based on the file extension. Colors and styles are configurable through properties files.
  • Code autocompletion. The editor suggests words and functions based on the current context. Works with languages such as C++, Python, Java, and others. Autocompletion lists are built from the words present in the document and from API files.
  • Code folding. Lets you collapse and expand code blocks such as functions, loops, and conditionals. Makes it easier to navigate long files. Folding is controlled through interactive margins on the left side of the editor.
  • Find and replace. Includes advanced search tools with regular expression support. Operations can be performed in the current document or across multiple files. Replacement supports batch changes.
  • External command execution. SciTE can interact with compilers and command-line tools. Results are shown in a built-in output pane. Commands are configured through properties files.
  • Bookmarks. Lets you place bookmarks on specific lines for quick reference. Bookmarks can be navigated with keyboard shortcuts.
  • Macros and scripting. Supports recording and running macros to automate repetitive tasks. Macros are recorded as sequences of user actions. The editor can also be extended with Lua scripts.
  • Interface customization. Many interface elements can be modified through configuration files. Includes options for fonts, colors, pane layout, and editor behavior.
  • Abbreviations. Lets you define abbreviations that expand into longer text snippets as you type. Speeds up writing repetitive code constructs.
  • Multiple buffers. Supports opening several documents at the same time, switching between them with tabs. Each buffer keeps its own state, such as the cursor position and folding.
  • Encoding support. Handles UTF-8, UTF-16, and various legacy character encodings. Line ending formats can be detected and converted.
  • Session and import files. Configuration can be split into modular properties files that are imported on demand. Sessions let you restore the set of open files.

SciTE was created by Neil Hodgson using the Scintilla component. The first public version appeared in 1998. The editor is written in C++ and designed to be lightweight and fast. Scintilla, the underlying component, was also developed by Hodgson specifically for source code editors. SciTE is distributed as free software under a permissive license. Over the years it has received contributions from many developers in the open source community.
