  • Automated scheduled capture. The application takes screenshots of the main desktop and connected monitors continuously, based on a user-configurable time interval. This process operates in the background without requiring manual interaction. The minimum interval is one second and the maximum is one hour. Each capture is stamped with a precise date and time for chronological organization.
  • Local storage with configurable retention. All captures are saved to the Mac's local hard drive. The user defines the retention policy, determining how many days images are kept before automatic deletion. Storage settings manage disk space usage, allowing a balance between the depth of the historical archive and system resources.
  • Visual timeline navigation. A timeline interface allows browsing through captures organized by day and hour. Each thumbnail represents a specific captured moment. Navigation includes jumps between days and individual frames. Arrow keys and trackpad gestures enable fast movement through the historical archive.
  • Sequential activity playback. A playback mode displays captures in sequence, recreating screen activity over time. Playback speed is adjustable. This mode simulates a video composed of individual frames, providing a continuous review of extended periods of activity.
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR). An integrated OCR engine indexes all visible text within each screenshot. The indexing process runs locally on the device, without transmitting data to external servers. Recognized text includes content from application windows, websites, documents, and messages.
  • Text search in captures. A search system examines the text indexed by OCR across the entire historical archive. Search terms return results with thumbnails of the captures where the text appears. Each result shows the visual context of the found text and allows direct access to that specific moment.
  • Exclusion of specific applications. A feature that allows defining applications whose windows will not be captured. When an application on the exclusion list is active or visible, ScreenMemory omits those areas or pauses capture. This feature protects the privacy of sensitive information in selected applications.
  • Temporary capture pause. A mechanism to temporarily suspend the capture process during defined periods. The user activates this function during meetings, presentations, or when complete privacy is required. Capture automatically resumes once the configured pause time has elapsed.
  • Marking important moments. A tool to label specific captures as significant or highlighted moments. Marked captures receive a special identification and can be filtered for quick access. This system organizes visual references to recurring or particularly relevant information.
  • Exporting individual captures. The ability to export any stored capture in standard image formats. Export preserves the original resolution of the capture. Exported images can be used in documentation, reports, or as external references outside the application.
  • Spotlight integration. Indexing of ScreenMemory content into the macOS Spotlight search system. This integration allows finding captures through the operating system's global search. ScreenMemory results appear alongside files, emails, and other system items.
  • Power saving mode. A setting that automatically adjusts capture intervals based on the Mac's power state. When the device is running on battery, it can increase the interval between captures to conserve energy. When plugged in, it restores the originally configured interval.
  • Multi-screen monitoring. Support for simultaneously capturing all monitors connected to the Mac. Each screen generates its own independent capture stream. In the timeline, captures from different screens are synchronized by timestamp for correlated review.
  • Password protection. An authentication system that restricts access to the application and its historical archive. It requires a password to start ScreenMemory or to access past captures. Local encryption protects both the application and stored data from unauthorized access.
  • System event notifications. A setting that links automatic captures to specific system events, such as notifications, sound alerts, or active application changes. This creates a contextual archive relating visual activity to auditory or operating system events.

The ScreenMemory application began its development in 2021. The initial development stemmed from a developer's personal need to maintain a reliable visual record of their work activity on macOS. The first functional version was completed at the end of 2022 after eighteen months of programming work and testing. The code was written primarily in Swift, leveraging native macOS frameworks like AppKit and Core Data for the interface and storage respectively. The OCR engine incorporates Apple's computer vision libraries. Subsequent development included performance optimization for continuous background operation and the implementation of efficient search systems over large volumes of images.
