Sonarr is a server application for managing the downloading of TV series. It monitors RSS feeds, identifies new episodes, interacts with download clients, and organizes files into a defined structure.

• RSS Monitoring. The system continuously scans configured RSS feeds to identify new episodes of series added to the library. This process occurs at scheduled intervals. The application filters the results based on parameters such as quality and format defined in each series' profile.
• Automatic Downloading. When a new episode matching the established criteria is detected, Sonarr sends the download request to a configured client. It supports clients like SABnzbd, NZBGet, qBittorrent, Transmission, and Deluge. The download is managed without manual intervention.
• Existing Library Management. The application can scan a local folder where episodes are already stored. It compares the found files against its database and identifies missing episodes. Subsequently, it initiates the automatic search and download of that absent content.
• Quality Upgrade. A preference order for video formats can be defined. The system can replace an existing file with a higher quality version. For example, it can replace an episode in SD quality with a 1080p or 4K version when the latter becomes available.
• Failed Download Handling. If a downloaded file does not pass health checks or does not extract correctly, Sonarr marks the download as failed. It automatically searches for an alternative release and sends it to the download client, deleting the defective file.
• Manual Search. The user can initiate a manual search for any episode. The interface displays a list of all available releases from the configured indexers, allowing the selection of a specific one. Reasons why a release was rejected in automatic mode are also shown.
• File Renaming. The application renames video files and folders according to a customizable scheme. Tags such as series title, season number, episode number, episode title, and quality are used. This ensures consistent organization within the file system.
• Integration with Download Managers. Native connection with SABnzbd and NZBGet for Usenet, and with BitTorrent clients. Sonarr sends the NZB or torrent link, monitors progress, handles file extraction, and moves the completed content to its final location.
• Integration with Media Centers. After completing a download, Sonarr can send a notification to Kodi or Plex to update the library. It can also generate and send metadata files like NFOs and banners, compatible with these systems.
• Support for Special Releases. The application handles special episodes, previews, and recaps. It also manages files containing multiple episodes, correctly identifying each segment and renaming them as individual files or keeping them together based on configuration.
• Release Profiles and Classification. The user defines release profiles specifying allowed qualities and their preferred order. Exclusion terms can be applied to avoid unwanted formats. This classification determines which release is selected automatically.
• Calendar and Scheduling. The interface includes a calendar showing the air dates of future episodes and the download status of past episodes. Users can plan their content viewing and monitor pending acquisitions.

Sonarr's development began in 2013, initially under the name NZBDrone. The project was created by a team led by the developer known as Taloth. The code is written primarily in C# using the .NET framework. The application is maintained by a group of contributors on the GitHub platform.
