SWI Prolog

SWI Prolog — Free Download. Logic Programming Language
SWI-Prolog is a development environment for the Prolog programming language. It includes a compiler, debugger, standard libraries, and tools for building logic-based applications. The system supports modular programming, concurrency, a graphical interface, and connections to other languages.

  • Incremental compiler. SWI-Prolog compiles Prolog code to bytecode incrementally, allowing you to load and modify parts of a program without recompiling the entire project. The compiler optimizes performance through techniques such as predicate indexing.
  • Graphical debugger. The debugging tool shows the execution flow step by step with a visualization of the search tree. It lets you set breakpoints, inspect variables, and trace predicate calls.
  • Built-in libraries. Includes modules for handling lists, sets, mathematical operations, string processing, and advanced data structures such as dictionaries and balanced trees.
  • Multithreaded interface. Supports concurrent programming through POSIX threads, with synchronization mechanisms such as mutexes and message queues between logical processes.
  • Database connectivity. Provides ODBC drivers and direct interfaces to systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite for storing and retrieving structured data.
  • Graphics generation. Integrates bindings for graphics libraries such as Qt and GTK, plus native capabilities for drawing diagrams, statistical charts, and visualizing data structures.
  • XML/JSON processing. Contains parsers and generators for modern data interchange formats, with schema validation and transformation between representations.
  • Web development. An integrated framework for building web applications with its own HTTP server, session handling, and dynamic content generation through templates.
  • Integration with other languages. Lets you call functions written in C, Java, Python, and .NET through FFI (Foreign Function Interface) with automatic data type conversion.
  • Development environment. Includes a code editor with syntax highlighting, autocompletion, navigation between modules, and tools for static analysis of Prolog programs.
  • Module system. Organizes code into independent logical units with predicate visibility control and mechanisms for importing and exporting functionality.
  • Exception handling. Implements the standard model of catching and throwing exceptions, with the ability to define specific handlers for different types of errors.

SWI-Prolog was created in 1987 by Jan Wielemaker at the University of Amsterdam. Initial development was done in C, with extensions specific to UNIX systems. Since 1995 it has been an open-source project, now distributed under the BSD license. The current stable version remains compatible with the ISO Prolog standard while adding its own extensions. The code is still written primarily in C, with Prolog components for the high-level libraries.
