  • Creating virtual drives. Visual Subst allows you to assign a drive letter (such as X:, Y:, Z:) to any folder on the system. The virtual drive appears in File Explorer as a real disk, but it is actually a link to the selected location.
  • Intuitive graphical interface. The application shows a list of existing virtual drives and offers buttons to add, edit, or remove drives. No advanced knowledge is required to use it.
  • Integration with Windows Explorer. Created drives appear in "This PC" alongside physical disks. They can be accessed like any other drive.
  • Persistence of settings. Optionally, virtual drives can be saved so they are automatically restored when Windows starts. This avoids having to manually recreate them after restarting the system.
  • Drag and drop. To create a virtual drive, you can drag a folder from Windows Explorer directly into the Visual Subst window.
  • Quick letter assignment. The program automatically suggests available drive letters, speeding up the configuration process.
  • Modifying existing drives. Allows changing the path associated with a virtual drive or its letter without needing to delete and recreate it.
  • Minimized execution. Visual Subst can run in the background, showing only an icon in the system tray.
  • Command line support. In addition to the graphical interface, it offers parameters to create and manage virtual drives via scripts or shortcuts.
  • Compatibility with recent Windows versions. Works correctly on modern operating systems, maintaining stability and performance.
  • Default English language. The interface is in English, but its use is understandable without advanced knowledge of the language.
  • Portable configuration. Does not require complex installation and can be run from a USB drive without leaving traces on the computer.

Visual Subst was developed by NTWind Software, a company known for creating utilities for Windows. The program was initially released in the 2000s and has received periodic updates to maintain compatibility with new versions of the operating system. It is written in C++ and uses native Windows APIs to implement virtual drives. Although it is not open source, NTWind Software has kept the program functional and stable over the years.
