  • Massive project handling. Frieze supports projects with over 10,000 subtitle lines while maintaining immediate system responsiveness during editing and navigation, essential for full-length features or complete operas without splitting files.
  • Multi-language tracks. The application supports an unlimited number of simultaneous subtitle tracks, each with independent controls for styling, screen positioning, and visibility, facilitating complex multilingual performances.
  • Output mapping. Users can route tracks to multiple physical screens or virtual outputs, with live previews for each destination, ideal for projection systems with several monitors or confidence displays.
  • Timeline precision. The tool offers multiple timeline view modes, inline timecode editing, and real-time external LTC/SMPTE signal following, plus bookmarks and subtitle density view for detailed timing work.
  • Streaming and external control. Includes NDI video input and output, as well as connection with OSC devices such as QLab or other show control systems for automated synchronization.
  • Import pipeline. The software allows import of SRT, TXT, RTF, DOCX files and complete Glypheo projects, including a preview and validation step before final import to catch formatting issues early.
  • Character and line styling. Offers detailed typographic control enabling different styles on individual characters or full lines, including color, font, size, and effects like italics or bold.
  • Timecode synchronization. Frieze can read and generate SMPTE timecode (LTC) via audio, allowing precise synchronization with video servers, projectors, or external recorders during live performances.
  • Flexible editing modes. Provides list view, timeline view, and density view editing modes, adapting to the operator's tasks during cueing, translation, or final verification passes.
  • Template customization. Teams can create and save complete project style templates and configuration presets, ensuring consistency across different shows or venues within the same production.
  • Command automation. Includes a customizable shortcut and command system that can be triggered via keyboard, MIDI, or OSC signals to speed up the most frequent operations during a live show.

Frieze development began in 2016, created by the London-based independent company Frieze Ltd. The application is primarily programmed in C++, which provides the high performance required for real-time processing and management of large subtitle data volumes without appreciable latency. Since its first release, the software has been adopted by theaters and cinemas across Europe and America, maintaining an update cycle focused on stability and incorporating features requested directly by industry professionals.
