  • Remote drive mounting. Mountain Duck integrates cloud storage services as virtual drives in the system. This lets you access remote files without downloading them completely, working with them as if they were stored locally.
  • Multiple protocol support. The application is compatible with a variety of protocols, including Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud Storage, OpenStack Swift, WebDAV, FTP, SFTP, and SMB. Each protocol is configured independently with its own specific parameters.
  • File encryption. Mountain Duck offers transparent file encryption through Cryptomator. Data is encrypted before it is uploaded to the cloud, ensuring the privacy and security of sensitive information.
  • Selective synchronization. Lets you choose which files and folders are synchronized locally. Files that have not been downloaded take up little space and can be opened on demand.
  • System integration. Mounted drives appear in the operating system's file explorer. You can drag and drop files, edit documents, and perform other operations just as on a local drive.
  • Offline access. Files marked for offline access remain available without a connection. Changes are synchronized automatically once the internet connection is restored.
  • Advanced authentication. Supports authentication via password, SSH key, OAuth, and access tokens. Connection credentials are stored securely in the system keychain.
  • Transfer monitoring. Shows the progress of file transfers, with details on speed, remaining time, and the size of the data transferred.
  • Connection history. Records all operations performed, including uploads, downloads, and errors. The history helps you diagnose problems and review recent activity.
  • Icon customization. Lets you assign custom icons to each mounted drive so you can identify them quickly in the system.
  • Scripting and automation. Mountain Duck can be controlled through scripts and command-line tools. This makes it easier to integrate with automated workflows.

Mountain Duck was developed by the Swiss company iterate GmbH, known for creating applications such as Cyberduck. The project began in 2013 as an extension of Cyberduck's capabilities, focusing on direct integration with the file system. The application is built on the same codebase as Cyberduck, which is written in Java, and uses native components to ensure compatibility with macOS and Windows. Over the years, it has added support for new protocols and improvements in stability and performance.
