OllyDbg is an assembler-level debugger for Windows systems. It focuses on analyzing and debugging binary code and is especially useful in reverse engineering. The program displays the disassembled code, registers, memory, and stack in real time. It works with 32-bit (x86) applications.
- Real-time disassembly. OllyDbg displays disassembled machine code in a readable format. Lets you navigate through instructions, set breakpoints, and follow the execution flow.
- Memory analysis. Provides a detailed view of the process memory. Lets you inspect and modify memory regions, search for patterns, and track changes.
- Step-by-step debugging. Lets you run instructions one at a time (step into, step over). Makes it easier to follow changes in registers and memory during execution.
- Breakpoints. Supports standard, hardware, and conditional breakpoints. Lets you pause execution at specific addresses or under certain conditions.
- Call tracking. Records the sequence of function calls (call stack). Helps you understand the structure of the program and its execution flow.
- Structure analysis. Identifies and displays data structures such as strings, constants, and jump tables. Recognizes common patterns in binary code.
- Direct modification. Lets you edit instructions, registers, and memory during debugging. Changes are applied immediately without recompiling.
- Plugins. Extensible architecture based on plugins. Adds features such as advanced analysis, support for additional formats, or automation.
- Conditional expressions. Evaluates mathematical and logical expressions during debugging. Useful for filtering data or triggering complex breakpoints.
- Code comparison. Compares the modified code with the original file through its built-in copy and patch tools and plugins. Highlights changes in instructions or data.
OllyDbg was created by Oleh Yuschuk, with its first release in 2000. Active development by the author ended with version 2.01, and the tool has since been kept alive by the community through plugins and unofficial builds. It is written mainly in C with assembly components and is optimized for low-level operations. Although it only supports 32-bit applications, it is still widely used in malware analysis and reverse engineering.
