  • Editing modes. Spacemacs offers two main modes: Emacs and Vim. Vim mode emulates Vim keys and commands, allowing users familiar with Vim to work without changing their habits. Emacs mode uses traditional Emacs keyboard shortcuts.
  • Layer system. Layers are sets of configurations and packages grouped by functionality. Users can enable or disable layers according to their needs, such as layers for Python, JavaScript, or LaTeX.
  • Organized interface. The distribution of windows and panels is optimized for fast navigation between files and tools. It includes a customizable status bar and a tab navigation system.
  • Git integration. Spacemacs includes tools for working with Git directly from the editor. It supports diff visualization, staging changes, and conflict resolution.
  • Smart autocompletion. It uses systems like Company and Helm to offer code and command suggestions based on the current context.
  • Multi-language support. It includes configurations for over 100 programming languages, with syntax highlighting, formatting, and error checking.
  • Advanced customization. Users can modify almost any aspect of the editor using configuration files in Emacs Lisp. Layers allow adding functionality without manually writing code.
  • Search tools. Integrates fast searchers like Helm and Ivy to navigate files, commands, and buffers with few keystrokes.
  • Package management. Spacemacs uses ELPA and MELPA to automatically install and update packages. Layers manage dependencies between packages.
  • Extensive documentation. Includes a detailed guide accessible from the editor. Each layer and function has its own explanatory section.

Spacemacs was created by Sylvain Benner in 2014. It is written primarily in Emacs Lisp, with contributions from an active community of developers. The project emerged as a way to combine the best of Emacs and Vim into a single tool, maintaining a coherent and well-documented configuration. Since its release, it has gained popularity among programmers and technical writers.
