  • Recursive folder scanning. The application traverses directory trees to locate all supported audio files (WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC, OGG). It extracts file paths, names, sizes, and modification dates. The scan builds a complete database of the audio content without missing nested subdirectories, ensuring no sample remains outside the catalog.
  • Local SQLite database engine. Pulp stores all sample information inside an internal SQLite database. Metadata, tags, BPM values, key signatures, and file paths are persisted in a single .db file. This provides fast searching, filtering, and data durability without requiring external servers, network connections, or complex setup procedures.
  • Audio metadata extraction. The software reads audio file headers to retrieve technical attributes: duration, bitrate, sample rate, channel count (mono/stereo), and encoding format. These values are displayed in the main table and can be used to sort or filter samples by technical quality, bit depth, or length, assisting in project‑specific selection.
  • Automatic tempo (BPM) detection. Pulp analyzes each sample using rhythm detection algorithms, calculating beats per minute. The resulting BPM value is written into the database, allowing users to sort and filter loops by tempo. This function accelerates synchronization when building tracks or DJ sets by matching rhythmic foundations.
  • Musical key detection. The application includes a pitch recognition system that determines the root note and scale type (major or minor) for each sample. Key information is stored alongside the sample, enabling harmonic matching of loops, one‑shots, and percussion elements. This prevents tonal clashes during composition.
  • Custom tag system. Users can assign free‑form text tags to individual samples, such as “kick”, “snare”, “pad”, “bass”, “vocal chop”, or “atmosphere”. Tags are stored in the database and allow category‑based searching independent of the original folder structure. The same sample can belong to multiple virtual collections.
  • Advanced text search. A search field filters the sample list in real time by filename, path, assigned tags, BPM range, or key signature. Partial matches are supported, and multiple terms work as implicit AND operators. Search results update instantly while typing, showing only samples matching the criteria.
  • Built‑in audio preview. Pulp includes an internal media player to audition any sample without launching external software. The preview provides basic waveform visualization, volume control, and scrubbing to any position within the file. Playback runs in parallel with other audio processes without exclusive access conflicts.
  • Sortable table columns. The sample table supports sorting by any displayed column: name, duration, BPM, key signature, file creation date, or size. A single click on a column header toggles between ascending and descending order. This column sorting allows rapid comparison of samples based on technical properties.
  • Combined BPM and key filters. Users can set a tempo range (e.g., 120–130 BPM) and select a specific key (e.g., C minor). The interface shows only samples satisfying both constraints simultaneously. This combined filtering reduces manual screening when searching for loops compatible with a project’s tempo and harmonic center.
  • Playlist export (M3U / TXT). Selected samples can be exported as playlist files in M3U or plain text format. These exported lists are importable by digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reaper, and Logic Pro. Paths can be stored as absolute or relative based on user preference.
  • Audio file explorer mode. Besides the database view, Pulp provides a filesystem tree panel. From this panel, users browse folders, see audio content of any directory, and import samples into the database with a single click. This mode replaces the operating system’s native file browser for sound‑specific navigation and selection.
  • Drag & drop to/from DAW. Samples can be dragged directly from Pulp’s interface onto audio tracks in supported DAWs. Conversely, audio files dragged from the desktop or file manager into Pulp are automatically added to the database. This drag‑and‑drop support reduces friction between sample management and music production.
  • Favorites and quick collections. Any sample can be marked as favorite using a star icon. Favorited samples are grouped in a dedicated section accessible from a toolbar button. Additionally, temporary quick collections can be created for current working sessions without altering permanent tags, preserving long‑term organization schemes.
  • Playback history and recent samples. The application records the last 50 samples played through the internal preview, displaying timestamps and filenames. The history panel allows re‑finding samples that were evaluated earlier without re‑running complex search or filter operations, saving time during sample selection.
  • Library statistics panel. Pulp calculates global metrics of the entire catalog: total sample count, distribution of formats (WAV, MP3, FLAC, OGG), average duration, most common BPM range, and predominant musical keys. This statistical summary is shown in a compact panel, helping users understand the composition of their personal library.

Pulp was created by Vince HI (vincehi) as a modern, lightweight alternative to ADSR Sample Manager. Development started in 2022, driven by the need for a sample manager not reliant on heavy frameworks. The program is written in Rust for backend logic (using the Tauri framework), TypeScript and SolidJS for the user interface, and SQLite as the embedded database. Prisma serves as the ORM to handle database queries. The project remains actively maintained on GitHub under the MIT license, with community contributions focusing on improved BPM detection, broader audio format support, and performance optimization for very large sample libraries exceeding 100,000 files.
