  • Multi-track timeline editing. The timeline allows overlaying video, audio, and image clips in separate layers. Each layer can be edited independently to adjust duration, position, and order. This structure facilitates synchronization of video with multiple soundtracks, effects, and titles without altering the original footage.
  • Transitions and visual effects. Includes over 50 transitions (fade, wipe, dissolve, zoom) and visual effects such as blur, vignette, color correction, and image stabilization. Each transition can be customized in duration and direction. Effects are applied with one click and previewed before rendering.
  • Chroma key (green screen). The green screen function replaces a solid color (typically green or blue) with another image or video. This serves to create virtual backgrounds, overlay effects, and composite scenes. Tolerance, softness, and edge parameters are adjusted to remove unwanted halos.
  • 360-degree and 4K video editing. The software processes video resolutions up to 4K (3840x2160) and 360 degrees. 360 files are edited with a spherical preview, maintaining spatial orientation. Text, effects, and transitions can be added that respect equirectangular projection, suitable for YouTube and VR headsets.
  • Professional audio tools. Includes equalizer, automatic normalization, audio effects (echo, chorus, distortion, reverb), and track mixing. Narration can be recorded directly from a microphone or music can be imported. The Audio to Text feature generates an automatic transcript of dialogue, and color classification separates speech and music sections.
  • Complete video optimization. Allows cropping, trimming, splitting, rotating, flipping, speed changing (slow motion or fast motion), reverse playback, and stabilizing camera-shaken videos. Color correction includes control of exposure, contrast, shadows, brightness, and saturation. Animated GIFs can also be created from selected segments.
  • Animated text and overlays. Incorporates templates for titles, credits, intros, and outros. Text can be animated in position, scale, rotation, and opacity using the keyframe animation editor. Custom logos and watermarks are added as independent layers with adjustable opacity.
  • Picture-in-Picture (PiP) effect. Overlays one video or image inside another, with configurable size and position. Useful for reactions, commentary, tutorials, or comparisons. Borders, shadows, and independent transitions are applied to the overlay frame, synchronized with the main audio.
  • Export formats and device compatibility. Supports AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, MKV, APNG, GIF, MPEG, FLV, and more. Export includes presets for YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, PlayStation Portable, iPod, iPhone, Android, and also burns DVD, Blu-ray, and AVCHD discs. Direct upload to Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive is available.
  • Plugins and sound effect libraries. Accepts third-party plugins (VST format for audio and DirectX for video), expanding correction tools, effect generation, and filters. Includes an integrated library of royalty-free sound effects and production music, organized by category (ambient, tension, cheerful, etc.).
  • Custom effect templates creation. The user can save any combination of effects (color, transition, filter) as a reusable template. These templates appear in a side panel for application to other projects with one click, maintaining specific parameters without reconfiguring each time.
  • Transcript-based editing. The Transcript Editor displays dialogue recognized by Audio to Text synchronized with the timeline. Cutting or deleting words in the text also edits the corresponding video clip. Accelerates cleanup of interviews, tutorials, or dialogue-heavy content.

VideoPad was created by NCH Software, a company founded in Canberra, Australia. Development of VideoPad began in 2008, with the first public version released in 2009. The application is written primarily in C++ for the video and audio processing core, utilizing the FFmpeg library for encoding and decoding multimedia formats. The user interface is implemented with NCH's internal framework (NCH GUI Toolkit), enabling native execution on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android with a common codebase.
