  • Two-panel and multi-tab interface. The main interface is organized into two vertical or horizontal panels that function independently. Each panel can contain multiple tabs, allowing several directory locations to be open simultaneously. This setup streamlines tasks like copying, moving, and comparing between different folders.
  • Complete interface customization. The program's visual and behavioral elements are configurable. Fonts, colors, panel layouts, and toolbar buttons can be modified. Actions and menus can be redefined according to the user's workflow requirements.
  • Customizable keyboard shortcuts. Each command and function of the program can be associated with a customizable key combination. Users define their own keyboard shortcut schemes to access frequent operations without using the mouse.
  • Definition of custom tools. External applications and scripts can be integrated as menu items or toolbar buttons. These tools can be configured with parameters, and their execution processes the currently selected files.
  • Configurable side panel. An additional panel can display system information, a directory tree, quick previews, or devices. Its content and position are adjustable from the program's options.
  • Coloring by extension or attributes. Files in the list are colored according to predefined or custom rules. Criteria include file extension type, system attributes like hidden or read-only, and size. This feature facilitates quick visual identification.
  • Background operations. Tasks like copying and moving files or folders run in the background. The graphical interface does not lock up during these operations, allowing you to continue with other activities while data is being processed.
  • Folder content merging. When copying or moving directories, the software detects name conflicts and offers options to merge contents. Collisions are resolved file by file, with the option to select which version to keep.
  • Integrated clients for remote protocols. The program includes native connectivity for SSH/SFTP, FTP/FTPS, SMB, AFP, and WebDAV. Connections to remote servers can be established without additional software, managing files as if they were local.
  • Text editor with syntax highlighting. An integrated editor opens and modifies plain text files. It recognizes the syntax of programming and markup languages like HTML, CSS, SQL, Python, and Objective-C, applying color schemes to improve code readability.
  • File splitting and joining. A utility splits large files into pieces of a specific size to facilitate transport or storage. The reverse function reassembles the pieces to reconstruct the original file without data loss.
  • Dropbox integration. Application settings can be exported to and imported from a Dropbox account. This mechanism synchronizes preferences and custom tools between different installations of the program on various computers.
  • Checksum calculation and verification. MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 checksums can be generated and validated for individual files. This function verifies data integrity and detects corruption or unauthorized modifications.
  • Support for compressed archives. The browser treats files like ZIP, RAR, 7-ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, AR/IPK, ISO9660, and RPM as virtual folders. Their contents can be viewed, files can be extracted selectively, internal items can be deleted, and nested archives can be browsed.
  • Advanced search and duplicates. The search engine locates files based on criteria including name, size, modification date, and textual content. A special mode identifies duplicate files by comparing names, sizes, or cryptographic hashes.
  • Multi-rename tool. A utility renames batches of files by applying predefined rules or custom patterns. Operations include text substitution, sequential numbering, case changes, and extension modification.
  • Subversion support. Integration with Subversion 1.6 and higher enables basic version control operations. Working copy statuses can be reviewed, local copies updated, and changes committed to the repository directly from the file manager's interface.
  • Experimental Git support. An experimental feature interacts with Git repositories. It performs basic operations, although its integration is less complete than that offered for Subversion.
  • Keychain for passwords. A secure system stores access credentials for remote servers and services. Passwords are encrypted and restored in subsequent sessions, eliminating the need to re-enter them constantly.
  • Quick-Look integration. On macOS systems, Quick-Look technology generates instant previews of selected files. The contents of images, documents, and multimedia files can be viewed without opening external applications.

Development of CRAX Commander began in 2009. The creator and lead developer is Martin Koller. The program was originally written in the Objective-C programming language, with additional components in C and shell scripts for specific functionalities.
