  • Application launcher and file search. Instant access to installed applications, documents, and system items by typing their name. The search indexes the local file system and displays results in real-time, similar to Spotlight but with greater speed and filtering options. It allows you to launch the selected application directly from the search box.
  • Web search and calculations. Perform direct searches in configured search engines and calculate mathematical expressions or unit conversions within the same input box. Supports currency, temperature, length, and other unit conversions, displaying the result without needing to open an additional application.
  • Unlimited clipboard history. A chronological record of everything copied to the clipboard, including text, images, and links. The history is stored locally and can be searched by keywords. It allows you to retrieve and paste any previously copied item, eliminating the limitation of a single item in the system clipboard.
  • Extensions for third-party services. Integration with external platforms through extensions installable from the built-in store. Each extension adds specific commands to interact with the service, such as creating issues on GitHub, joining Zoom meetings, searching for tasks in Asana, or managing files in Google Drive, all without opening the browser.
  • Custom script commands. Create and execute custom scripts in various languages (Bash, Python, Swift, etc.) directly from the interface. Script commands appear in search results and can be executed with arguments, allowing you to automate user-specific workflows.
  • Window management. Organize and redistribute application windows on the screen using predefined or custom layouts. It offers commands to move windows to halves, thirds, or quadrants of the screen, maximize, center, or move them between monitors, improving workspace management.
  • Text snippets. Store frequently used text fragments, associated with an abbreviated keyword. By typing the keyword in any text field on the system, it can be automatically expanded to the full fragment, speeding up the typing of common responses, emails, or code.
  • Artificial Intelligence commands. Access language models like ChatGPT from the command box to generate text, answer questions, summarize content, or assist in programming tasks. It allows you to create custom AI commands that combine web search and model capabilities to automate complex queries.
  • Quicklinks and deep links. Create shortcuts to URLs, files, or system actions that can be launched using a keyword. Quicklinks can contain dynamic parameters, allowing, for example, to search directly on a website by entering the search term after the keyword.
  • Cloud sync. Store application settings, extensions, snippets, themes, and keyboard shortcuts in the cloud. It keeps the work environment identical on all of a user's Mac computers, facilitating the transition between devices without needing to configure each one manually.
  • Customizable visual themes. Modify the appearance of the Raycast interface using built-in theme editors. You can adjust colors, fonts, borders, and opacity, or install themes created by the community, allowing the aesthetic to be adapted to personal preferences.
  • Quick text translation. Instantly translate words or phrases between multiple languages without leaving the current application. The translation command automatically detects the source language and allows you to copy the result or hear its pronunciation via speech synthesis.

Raycast's development began in 2020 by the company Raycast Technologies, founded by Thomas Paul Mann and Petr Nikolaev. The application was initially launched in a public beta version, with the stated goal of creating a native productivity tool for macOS that would overcome the limitations of existing solutions. The development team has grown to include engineers specialized in user interfaces, systems, and extension ecosystems. Raycast is primarily written in TypeScript, using web technologies for parts of its interface, but it runs as a native macOS application built on Apple's frameworks.
