  • Quick task capture. Task entry is done through a text field where multiple items can be written on separate lines. The system recognizes special tags (# for projects, @ for delegation) during entry, eliminating the need to use the mouse to assign basic properties.
  • "Today" view. This view consolidates all tasks requiring immediate attention: items marked as "Focus", tasks due today, tasks scheduled for today, and tasks already in progress. It provides a centralized view of the day's work.
  • "Upcoming" view. Displays tasks with future due dates or scheduled dates, organized by date. It also presents the next pending actions within each project, facilitating short and medium-term planning.
  • "Waiting" view. Groups all tasks that have been delegated to other people, organizing them by the assignee. It allows for clear tracking of items that depend on the action of others.
  • Organization by projects. Tasks can be grouped into projects, but this is not mandatory. Projects represent larger initiatives or areas of responsibility, helping to break down complex goals into manageable actions.
  • Contextual categories. In addition to projects, tasks can be assigned to optional categories that provide additional context (such as "Home", "Office", "Read"). Categories allow you to filter and view tasks from different perspectives.
  • Priority system. Each task can be assigned to one of four defined priority levels (high, medium, low, none). Priority influences the display order and visual indicators within the lists.
  • Due dates and scheduling. Support for assigning specific due dates. The scheduling feature allows you to postpone tasks to future dates, preventing them from appearing in active views until the right time.
  • Kanban board. Implements a visual workflow with configurable columns (such as "To Do", "In Progress", "Done"). Tasks are represented as cards that can be moved between columns by dragging, showing the progress status.
  • Notes and attachments. Each task can contain a detailed description in rich text format. Files can be attached directly to tasks, keeping reference information associated with the corresponding action item.
  • Touch Bar support. On compatible MacBook Pros, the Touch Bar displays contextual controls for the most frequent actions, such as completing tasks, deferring them, or changing their priority, without needing to use the main menus.
  • iCloud synchronization. Uses iCloud to keep data synchronized between the macOS desktop application and the mobile apps for iOS (Firetask Mobile). Changes are reflected on all devices linked to the same Apple ID.
  • Perspectives and filters. Offers multiple ways to view data: by project, by category, by priority, by date, or by status. Filters allow you to create custom views that show only a specific subset of tasks.
  • Integrated search. Local search finds tasks by any text contained in their title, notes, or properties. Results can be refined using operators to search within specific projects or categories.
  • Focus mode. Allows you to mark specific tasks as "Focus", highlighting them above others. These tasks appear in the "Today" view and can be the starting point for a concentrated work session.

Firetask was initially developed by the Swiss company Paretix. The first public version was released in 2010. The development of the macOS application is primarily done in Objective-C and Swift, using the native Cocoa frameworks. The development team has focused on creating deep integration with the Apple ecosystem, leveraging technologies like iCloud, Touch Bar, and Notifications. The mobile versions for iPhone and iPad were released later, expanding the accessibility of the management system.
