  • File Transfer. gFTP allows bidirectional file transfer between the client and server. It supports upload, download, and recursive transfer of entire directories while maintaining the folder structure.
  • Multiple Protocols. The application implements connectivity through standard FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS), HTTP, HTTPS, SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), and FSP (File Service Protocol). Each protocol maintains specific security configurations.
  • Simultaneous Connections. gFTP can establish multiple connections to different servers simultaneously. Each session is managed in separate tabs, allowing parallel transfer operations between different systems.
  • Customizable User Interface. The arrangement of panels, fonts, and colors can be configured according to preferences. Users can reorganize interface elements and save display profiles.
  • Server Bookmarks. Includes a bookmark system for storing frequent connection configurations. Bookmarks save host, port, protocol, and access credential information.
  • Transfer Log. Maintains a detailed record of all operations performed during the session. The log includes timestamps, executed commands, and transfer results for auditing purposes.
  • Directory Comparison. Synchronization functionality that compares local and remote directories. Identifies new, modified, or deleted files on both ends of the connection.
  • Transfer Queues. Queue management system for scheduling and organizing file transfers. Allows pausing, resuming, and reorganizing pending operations.
  • Proxy Support. Advanced connection configuration through HTTP and SOCKS proxy servers. Includes basic and digest authentication for proxies requiring credentials.
  • File Filters. Filtering mechanism to include or exclude files during transfers. Uses regular expression patterns to select files by name, extension, or attributes.
  • Permission Handling. Tools for modifying file and directory permissions on remote servers. Allows changing read, write, and execute permissions for user, group, and others.
  • Automated Scripting. Ability to execute custom scripts before or after transfers. Supports shell scripts and other interpreted languages available on the system.
  • Multilingual Support. Interface translated into multiple languages including Spanish, English, French, German, and others. Language detection follows the operating system's regional settings.
  • Recursive Transfers. Capability to transfer entire directories with all their content recursively. Automatically preserves the hierarchical structure of folders and subfolders.
  • Transfer Summary. Provides detailed statistics on performed operations including transfer speed, time remaining, and amount of data transferred.

gFTP was originally created by Brian Masney in 1998. Initial development was done in C language using the GTK+ library for the graphical interface. The project emerged as a graphical alternative to command-line FTP clients available on Unix systems. The software was actively maintained until 2006 when official development ceased. In 2015, the project was revived by several contributors who migrated the code to GitHub and began applying patches and updates. The current version includes security fixes and compatibility with newer versions of GTK.
