- Multi-layer editor. LDtk lets you work with several overlapping layers, such as backgrounds, collisions, and objects. Each layer can have different properties and display settings.
- Customizable entity system. Entities can be defined with specific fields, such as health, speed, or behaviors. This makes it easy to create characters, enemies, and interactive objects.
- Auto-layer rules. The editor includes an advanced auto-layer system that automatically adjusts tiles based on their neighbors. You can configure rules for different terrain types and patterns.
- JSON export. Levels are saved in JSON format, which is compatible with most game engines. The data includes information about layers, entities, and custom properties.
- External tileset support. LDtk imports tilesets from image files, letting you reuse graphic assets. Tilesets can be adjusted in size, spacing, and padding.
- Custom fields. You can add extra fields to levels, entities, and tiles. These fields can be numbers, text, booleans, or lists of options.
- Grid editing mode. The interface uses an adjustable grid to place tiles precisely. Entities can also be positioned freely, without snapping to the grid.
- Selection and painting tools. Includes tools for selecting areas, copying tiles, and painting over large zones. Operations can be undone and redone.
- Game engine compatibility. LDtk offers integration with Unity, Godot, GameMaker, and other engines through official and community loaders and importers.
- Separate levels system. Projects can contain multiple levels organized in a world. Each level can have independent dimensions and properties.
- Colors and tags. Entities and layers can be marked with colors and tags for quick identification. Tags make it possible to filter elements in large projects.
- Entity references. Entities can be linked to one another through reference fields, even across different levels. This is useful for doors, switches, and other connected objects.
LDtk (Level Designer Toolkit) was developed by Sébastien Bénard, known for his work as lead game designer on Dead Cells. The project began in 2018 as a tool to simplify level design in 2D games, and its first public release arrived in 2020. The program is written in Haxe, a cross-platform programming language, and runs on Electron. It has received regular updates ever since.
