Switcheroo++

Switcheroo++ is a Windows application that replaces the native Alt-Tab window switcher. It organizes windows into columns: most recent in the center, most frequent applications on the left, and pinned windows on the right. It provides quick navigation, real-time search, and advanced window management.

• Column organization. The main interface displays windows in three distinct columns. The center column contains the most recently used windows. • Real-time filtering and search. As you type characters, the window list is filtered instantly. The algorithm searches for matches in window titles and process names. Matching characters are visually highlighted for quick identification.
• Multi-monitor support. The Switcheroo++ window automatically appears on the monitor where the mouse cursor is located. This behavior ensures the interface is always visible in the user's active workspace.
• Dark mode and high DPI settings. The application includes a dark interface theme to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. It scales correctly on high pixel density screens, displaying high-resolution icons and crisp text.
• UWP application support. It detects and displays windows from Universal Windows Platform applications alongside traditional desktop applications. Includes optimizations to speed up searching for this type of application.
• Highlighting rules system. Allows you to configure custom rules to highlight specific windows with colors or icons. Rules can be based on regular expressions applied to the window title, the executable process name, or a combination of both criteria.
• Context menus for window management. Right-clicking on any window in the list brings up a menu with actions: close the window, pin or unpin, switch to it, open the executable file location, or copy the window title to the clipboard.
• Full keyboard and mouse navigation. Support for scrolling with the mouse wheel, arrow key navigation, and dedicated keyboard shortcuts. Includes configuration to choose between single or double-click to switch to a window selected with the mouse.
• Configurable keyboard shortcuts. The application's activation and main functions can be assigned to custom key combinations. Includes predefined shortcuts for actions like closing windows (Ctrl+W), anonymizing titles (Alt+P), or opening a new explorer window (Alt+E).
• Window pinning. Any window can be pinned to the right column to keep it always accessible, regardless of when it was last used. Pinned windows do not affect the order of the central columns during normal navigation.
• Result limit and performance optimization. Setting to limit the maximum number of windows displayed during a search, improving responsiveness on systems with over 100 open windows. Preloads window data at startup to speed up the first invocation.
• Automatic removal of common suffixes. Automatically removes repetitive fragments from window titles (such as " - Google Chrome") when they appear in more than half of the windows of the same process, simplifying the list display.
• Title anonymization mode. With the Alt+P combination, actual window titles are hidden, replaced by generic text. This feature is designed for taking screenshots or giving demonstrations without exposing private information.
• Virtual desktop support. The application is compatible with Windows virtual desktops, showing and allowing switching between windows located in different virtual workspaces.

Switcheroo development began in 2009 by James Sulak. In 2014, Regin Larsen took over maintenance of the project. The current version, Switcheroo++, has been maintained by Christopher Özbek since 2020. The application is written in C# using the .NET framework. Version 0.9.7, released in 2025, includes the column-based architecture, multi-monitor support, and an extensible system of rules for highlighting windows.
