  • DSLR camera control. Dragonframe integrates with digital single-lens reflex cameras via USB or FireWire connections. The interface adjusts parameters such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. The live view is displayed on the main screen for precise frame composition.
  • Real-time image capture. The capture module records high-resolution photographs directly from the camera connected to the computer. Each image is automatically saved in a numbered sequence. The instant playback function shows the previous frame overlaid with transparency.
  • Step-by-step animation (Onion Skinning). The onion skinning technique allows for visualizing multiple previous and subsequent frames simultaneously. Opacity levels are configurable separately for previous and future frames. This tool is essential for maintaining consistency and fluidity of movement.
  • Dialogue guide and audio synchronization. A built-in audio editor loads WAV or AIFF sound files. Visual waveforms and beat markers facilitate precise lip-sync for characters with dialogue. Digital X-Sheets can be created to plan phonetics.
  • Motion control. The motorization functionality integrates motion control systems for cameras and sets. It allows programming smooth camera movements, including pans, tilts, and dollies. Position values are automatically interpolated between defined keyframes.
  • Drawing tools and masks. A set of drawing utilities enables the creation of masks and guides directly on the live view. Lines and shapes are used to align elements or mark composition areas. Drawing layers do not affect the original captured images.
  • Support for stereoscopic 3D animation. The stereoscopic mode manages two cameras to produce 3D content. It provides adjustments for convergence and parallax. The preview allows viewing the result in anaglyph (red/cyan) or split-screen mode.
  • Shot sequencer and project management. The project structure organizes all sequences, audio, and settings into a single file. A shot browser allows for quickly jumping between different scenes. The system maintains a version history for each capture.
  • DMX lighting controls. An optional module controls theatrical lighting systems using the DMX512 protocol. It allows saving and playing back complex lighting states that change in sync with the animation. It integrates with professional lighting consoles.
  • Time-lapse and intervalometer function. The time-lapse mode programs the camera to capture images at regular time intervals over extended periods. Settings include interval between shots, total number of images, and automatic exposure compensation. It is suitable for effects like cloud movement or plant growth.
  • Color calibration and LUT management. The software includes tools to calibrate the camera's color response using reference charts. It supports loading and applying custom Look-Up Tables (LUTs) to monitor a specific color style during capture. It keeps the original RAW files unaltered.
  • Physical Bluetooth keyboard (Dragonframe Keypad). A dedicated input device provides physical buttons for the main capture functions. The wireless connection reduces the risk of moving the camera or models during operation. The ergonomic design improves workflow speed during long sessions.

Dragonframe's development began in the 1990s. The creating company, Dragonframe LLC, was founded by software engineer and animator David G. Pimentel. The first commercial version was released for the Mac OS operating system. The codebase is written primarily in the C++ programming language, with specific components for the user interface and hardware control.
