Workflow capture. Folge records activity while using applications or websites. It takes screenshots with each mouse click, also using alternative methods like keyboard shortcuts or key combinations. Capture can be limited to a specific application, a concrete area, or the full screen. The pause function allows you to interrupt the recording to rearrange elements or add context without disrupting the overall process.
Nested steps. This feature allows creating instructions with multiple levels of detail within a single main step. Sub-steps can be added to expand the context of a specific action, breaking down complex procedures into manageable segments. This gives the guide a hierarchical structure, making it easier for readers to understand processes with multiple layers of action without cluttering the main view with excessive information.
Image editing and annotation. For each capture, nine annotation tools are available. These include geometric shapes like circles and rectangles, arrows, lines, text, and step numbers that are overlaid directly onto the image. Specialized tools allow you to blur sensitive information or highlight important areas with a magnifying glass effect. Annotations help direct the reader's attention to key elements in the screenshot.
Description editor. Each step of the guide includes a text editor with functionality similar to a word processor. This editor allows you to give each step a name and a detailed description. It supports inserting code snippets, quotes, and URL links. It provides control over text positioning, font selection, and the application of a full color palette using RGB or Hex values.
Step reorganization and management. After capture, all images are loaded into the program's main editor. From here, steps can be reordered by dragging, temporarily hidden, or deleted entirely. It is also possible to manually add new steps, either by capturing a new image or uploading a graphic file from your computer. This flexibility allows you to fine-tune the final sequence of the tutorial.
Export to multiple formats. Finished guides can be exported to seven different formats: PDF, HTML (simple and rich), PowerPoint, Word, Markdown, and JSON. The HTML formats are compatible for integration into knowledge bases like Confluence, SharePoint, Help Scout, or Zendesk. Each format maintains the step structure, annotated images, and descriptive text.
Advanced export customization. The appearance of the exported result can be modified. It is possible to use custom fonts, corporate colors, logos, and apply your own CSS stylesheets to control the layout. The cover editor with a drag-and-drop interface allows you to create a personalized initial page for documents like PDFs or presentations.
Security and privacy. Folge operates completely locally on the user's computer. All information, screenshots, and guides in progress are stored on the computer, without sending data to external servers or clouds. This model ensures that any sensitive or confidential information captured during the documented processes remains under the user's control at all times.
Interface translations. The program's user interface is available in several languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. This feature facilitates the adoption of the software in international work environments or by users who prefer to operate in their native language for more precise use.
AI Assistant (BYOK). This feature incorporates an artificial intelligence helper with the "Bring Your Own Keys" (BYOK) model. The assistant helps draft clearer and more comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs). By requiring the user to provide their own API keys, it maintains data privacy, as the queries are not sent to Folge's developer servers.

The development of Folge began as a desktop solution to streamline the creation of visual technical documentation. The founders, directly experiencing the manual workload involved in generating tutorials, started the project to automate the sequential capture of screenshots. The program is written in JavaScript, using the Electron framework, which allows it to run cross-platform on Windows and macOS systems.
