GameMaker is an integrated development environment (IDE) designed for creating video games. It provides tools for designing, programming and publishing games on a wide range of platforms, with no advanced programming knowledge required. The platform supports multiple operating systems and devices.
- Visual editor. GameMaker includes a visual editor that lets you design levels, characters and objects using drag and drop. This system simplifies prototyping and the initial setup of projects.
- GML language. GameMaker Language (GML) is a scripting language built into the program. It gives you advanced control over game logic, making it possible to create complex, customized systems.
- Cross-platform support. Games you create can be exported to Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5 and consoles such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.
- Sprite system. Lets you import and edit images for characters, objects and backgrounds. It includes basic animation and graphics editing tools.
- Built-in physics. GameMaker incorporates a physics engine based on Box2D, which makes it easy to simulate collisions, gravity and realistic movement.
- Sequence editor. A tool for creating cutscenes and complex animations on a timeline. Useful for narrative scenes and visual effects.
- Asset manager. Organizes all project elements, such as sprites, sounds, scripts and objects, in an easily accessible hierarchical structure.
- Built-in debugger. Helps you find and fix errors in your code. It shows variables, function calls and step-by-step execution.
- Network API. Provides functions for implementing online connectivity, such as TCP/UDP servers, HTTP requests and multiplayer lobby systems.
- Marketplace. An integrated platform where users can buy or sell assets such as sprites, sounds, scripts and extensions.
- Shader support. Lets you program advanced visual effects using GLSL, improving graphics with dynamic lighting and filters.
- Customizable export. Offers options to adjust build settings for each target platform, optimizing performance and compatibility.
GameMaker was created by Mark Overmars in 1999 as an educational program called Animo. In 2007, the company YoYo Games acquired the rights and relaunched it as GameMaker Studio. Originally written in Delphi, the current version uses C++ for the IDE and supports multiple languages in the runtime. In 2021, Opera acquired YoYo Games, continuing the development and maintenance of the tool.
