Pocket Code is an app that lets you develop games and animations directly on mobile devices. The platform uses a visual, block-based programming language designed to make it easier to learn the basics of coding. Projects you create can be shared with the Catrobat online community.
- Visual block editor. The programming interface is based on colored blocks that represent different commands and logic structures. Each block has a specific function, such as movement control, event handling or math operations. Blocks snap together to form code sequences.
- Object and sound library. Includes a collection of ready-made sprites, backgrounds and audio effects. Elements can be customized in size, color and behavior. You can also import external resources from the device gallery.
- Built-in physics system. Simulates gravity, collisions and forces in real time. Objects respond to interactions according to adjustable physical parameters, such as mass, friction and bounce.
- Device sensor support. Lets you use the accelerometer, gyroscope and GPS in your projects. Sensor data is turned into variables that you can access from the programming blocks.
- Vector drawing tools. Contains a graphics editor for creating and modifying sprites. Basic shapes can be combined and transformed using Boolean operations and node manipulation.
- Variables and lists. Supports creating global and local variables, as well as complex data structures. Lists let you store and process sets of related values.
- Timing and event control. Includes precise timers and condition-based triggers. Scripts can run in response to user actions or changes in the program environment.
- Export and sharing. Finished projects are saved in the .catrobat format and can be uploaded to the community platform. Other users can download, modify and reuse the code.
- Step-by-step debugging mode. Lets you run the program instruction by instruction while monitoring variable values. Shows syntax errors and logic problems during development.
- External hardware compatibility. Integrates with educational robotics kits via Bluetooth protocols. Special blocks control motors, lights and sensors on compatible devices.
- Multilingual support. The interface is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, English and German. Programming blocks display text in the language selected by the user.
- Cloud synchronization. Projects are automatically stored on remote servers. The system keeps previous versions and lets you continue working from different devices.
Pocket Code was initially developed in 2010 by the Catrobat team at Graz University of Technology, Austria. The project emerged as a mobile alternative to Scratch, aimed at teenagers and educators. The app is written mainly in Java for Android, with additional C++ components for graphics rendering. The non-profit organization Catrobat maintains ongoing development with contributions from international volunteers.
