- File navigation. Far Manager displays files and directories in a two-panel layout. Copy, move, rename and delete files using keyboard shortcuts. Supports operations on multiple files at once.
- Built-in text editor. Includes an editor with syntax highlighting, search and replace, encoding support and a hexadecimal mode. It can handle very large files.
- Plugin support. Functionality is extended through official and third-party plugins. Plugins add FTP, file comparison, registry management and other features.
- Network access. Access network shares and FTP servers. Remote files can be handled as if they were local.
- Task automation. Includes a macro language for automating repetitive actions. Macros can be recorded or written manually.
- File comparison. A tool for comparing file contents line by line. Highlights differences and lets you synchronize changes between files.
- Advanced search. Search for files by name, content, date and attributes. Results can be processed with bulk operations.
- Permission management. Modify file attributes and permissions on NTFS systems. Supports ACLs and advanced security settings.
- Archive support. Works with ZIP, RAR and other formats as virtual directories. Can extract and create archives.
- Customization. Detailed configuration of the interface, colors, shortcuts and behavior. Settings are saved between sessions.
- Built-in terminal. Includes a console for running system commands and scripts. Supports all Windows CMD commands.
- Portability. Can run from USB drives without installation. Settings are stored in local files.
Far Manager was created in 1996 by Eugene Roshal. The original version was written in assembly language for DOS. Starting in 2000, development continued under the leadership of a group of programmers. The current version is written in C++ and supports modern Windows systems. The project is still under active development with regular updates.
