WinDirStat is a tool designed to visualize and analyze disk space usage. It shows detailed information about files, directories, and their distribution through graphs and statistics.
- Graphical visualization. WinDirStat represents files and directories in a rectangular treemap. Each rectangle corresponds to a file or folder, and its size is proportional to the space it occupies. Colors indicate file types based on their extension.
- Detailed statistics. Provides a complete report on the space used by each directory and file. The data is displayed in a table with columns such as size, percentage of the total, and number of items.
- File type filtering. Lets you filter results by file extension. This helps you quickly identify which types of files take up the most disk space.
- Built-in cleanup. Includes options to delete files and directories directly from the interface. Before deleting, it shows a confirmation prompt to prevent accidental data loss.
- Report export. Analysis results can be saved in text format for later review or documentation.
- Hierarchical browsing. Shows the directory structure as a tree, letting you navigate between folders and subfolders in an organized way.
- Advanced search. Offers tools to locate specific files within the completed analysis, making it easier to find particular items.
- Color customization. The color schemes for file types can be adjusted to the user's preferences.
- Real-time updates. If changes are made to the file system during the analysis, WinDirStat can refresh the data to reflect the modifications.
- Multiple drive support. Lets you analyze hard drives, network drives, and external storage devices at the same time.
- Extended file information. Shows metadata such as creation date, last modification date, and attributes of the analyzed files.
- Directory comparison. Makes it easier to spot differences in space usage between similar folders or at different points in time.
WinDirStat was developed by Oliver Schneider, Bernhard Seifert, and Patrick Lerner. The project started in 2003 and is written in the C++ programming language. The tool was created to offer an efficient solution for analyzing disk space on Windows systems.
