FileNameWrangler is an application designed for renaming files in bulk. It lets you make structured changes to multiple files using predefined operations. The program runs on Windows and provides a graphical interface for configuring the transformations.
- Text replacement. Find and replace text strings within file names. Supports exact and partial matches, with optional case sensitivity. Can be applied to full names or only to specific parts.
- Case conversion. Convert file names to uppercase, lowercase, or title case. Affects the entire name or only the first letter of each word, depending on the selected setting.
- Automatic numbering. Add number sequences to the beginning or end of names. You can define the starting number, the increment, and the digit format (001, 002, etc.).
- Character removal. Delete specific characters or ranges of positions within the name. Can be configured to affect only the beginning, the end, or inner sections of the file name.
- Text insertion. Add text strings at fixed or relative positions within the name. Supports insertion based on character indexes or on detected patterns.
- Regular expressions. Advanced search and replace using regular expression syntax. Includes options to capture groups and use them in the replacement text.
- Extension changes. Change file extensions without altering the rest of the name. Supports converting the extension to uppercase or lowercase.
- Prefixes and suffixes. Add fixed text to the beginning or end of the file name. Can be combined with other operations to build complex naming structures.
- Metadata-based renaming. Use properties such as creation or modification date to generate new names. Extracts specific information from the files and incorporates it into the name.
- Pattern filtering. Select specific files using name masks. Lets you include or exclude files depending on whether they match the defined patterns.
- Preview of changes. Shows what the names will look like before the changes are applied. Compares original and new names in an organized list.
- Action history. Records the operations performed so that changes can be undone. Stores frequently used settings for later reuse.
FileNameWrangler was developed by Tsun in 2021. The program is written in AutoHotkey, a scripting language for automation on Windows. The first public version was released in June 2021, with later updates adding new name manipulation features. The tool was originally designed to handle large collections of media files, but its use has since expanded to other types of data. Development continues with improvements in stability and batch processing capabilities.
