Godot Engine is a video game engine that supports both two- and three-dimensional development. The program lets you export projects to Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and HTML5 web platforms. Its internal architecture is based on nodes and scenes, providing a system for organizing game elements. The engine includes an animation editor, a physics system and a built-in debugger. Developers can program game logic using GDScript, C# or C++ through GDExtension.
- Animation editor. Godot incorporates an animation editor that allows you to create frame-based animated sequences, skeletal animation for characters, morphing and cutscenes. The system can animate node properties, making it possible to create animations that change shader parameters or play sound effects at specific moments on the timeline.
- 2D and 3D physics system. The engine has its own physics system for two-dimensional and three-dimensional games. This system handles collision detection, rigid bodies, static bodies, characters, vehicles, raycasts and joints between objects. Version 4.4 includes support for the Jolt physics engine as an add-on.
- GDScript language. GDScript is the engine's main scripting language, designed specifically for Godot. Its syntax is similar to Python and it is optimized to work with the program's node and scene architecture. GDScript is high-level, object-oriented and dynamically typed, with optional static typing since version 3.1.
- Shader editor. The program includes a visual shader editor (shader graph) that lets you create visual effects for 2D and 3D materials using nodes. You can also write shaders directly in a GLSL-based language for particles and object materials. Shaders control the appearance of objects in real time.
- Particle system. Godot has a particle system for creating visual effects such as smoke, fire, explosions or rain. Particles can be controlled through shaders and respond to physical forces. Version 4.3 introduced improvements to particle turbulence and 3D noise textures.
- Built-in debugger. The engine includes a debugger that supports breakpoints and step-by-step code execution. This tool lets you inspect variables, examine the node tree in real time and analyze game performance while it runs.
- C# support. Godot offers official support for the C# language through .NET. This feature is available in specific versions of the engine and allows developers to use a language that is standard in the video game industry. Support includes editing in Visual Studio and VSCode through plugins.
- GDExtension for C++. The GDExtension technology lets you write game logic or high-performance algorithms in C++ without having to recompile the entire engine. This feature also makes it possible to integrate third-party libraries and SDKs into the project.
- Navigation system (pathfinding). The engine provides tools for 2D and 3D pathfinding using navigation meshes (navmesh). AI-controlled characters can calculate routes to move around the scene while avoiding obstacles. Version 4.1 introduced revamped avoidance algorithms for navigation.
- Vulkan renderer. Since version 4.0, Godot has supported the Vulkan graphics API. This renderer provides SDF-based global illumination, real-time dynamic reflections and improvements in overall graphics performance. The engine supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and 2.0 for devices with more limited hardware.
- Multiplayer support. Godot includes tools for creating online games with networking features. The engine supports connections through network protocols, allowing state synchronization between clients and the server. The network API handles HTTP requests and real-time communication.
Godot Engine began development in 2001 inside the Argentine company OKAM Studios, created by the programmers Juan Linietsky and Ariel Manzur. The engine was used internally by the studio for more than a decade to develop its own projects. In February 2014, Linietsky and Manzur released the program's source code on GitHub under the MIT License, a free software license that allows commercial use without restrictions. The first public stable version, Godot 1.0, was released in December 2014. The engine's name comes from Samuel Beckett's play "Waiting for Godot", a reference to the fact that there are always new features to add and the program is never considered completely finished. Godot 4.0 was released in March 2023 with Vulkan support, and version 4.4 was released in March 2025.
